washington's archbishop now on his way to rome to help select a new pope. first, breaking news right now where police are investigating two suspicious deaths. they found a man and a woman dead in the home of the 7200 block of bunker hill road. we have a news crew on the way with the latest information tonight on wusa9 at 11:00. at this hour washington's archbishop was on their way to rome to begin the process of electing a new pope to replace pope benedict xvi. we caught up with the cardinal at dulles international airport

before boarding his flight. he is among some 11 u.s. cardinals in the coming week to do a new vote on the pope. as surae chinn reports, he held sunday mass in northeast before leaving. >> you're going to need all the things we can get because this is a very important responsibility. >> parishioners and others sent prayers for the cardinal as he embarks on a world to elect a new pope. >> what has become the theme. >> reporter: he spent his last sunday mass before heading to rome honoring pope benedict xvi. >> and home to get the job done. and be open to the holy spirit. >> we are just here to give thanks to pope benedict xvi. >> reporter: the pope will step down on thursday as reasons for his retirement. some speculate the sex abuse scandal had something to do with it. >> i think that the new pope will be guided to just continue and to move us forward. >> reporter: he will be one of 117 who are eligible to participate in the conclave to

find pope benedict xvi's successor. and he is asking everyone for prayers. >> i can't imagine how i will ever have to do anything as important as this. >> do you think that it will be a long process? >> we'll leave all that in the hands of god. >> reporter: what he knows for sure, he'll be listening. >> once you're inside, you're suppose to be quiet because the idea is you're suppose to be listening to the holy spirit. >> reporter: he believes that the next pope will have to be younger and at the same time have the experience to be the chief. >> to be able to speak directly to people all over the glove. >> reporter: and they will enter them next month. and the next time we see the cardinal on u.s. soil will have a new pope leading the $1.2 billion catholics. i'm surae chinn for wusa9. the pope elevated world cardinal back in 2010. but admits that it is not likely that any of the u.s. cardinals will be in the

running for that position. in four days pope benedict xvi becomes the first pope in some 600 years to step down. and today giving his final sunday address before tens of thousands in st. peters square. the pope told them that he will continue to serve and love the church by praying and meditating after he leaves. he also thanked the faithful for their support during his time. >> and to give them a run of many expressions to fix those. and to have it in the 60s as they will need to continue the event maybe keep all eyes on them. and who they have used on the amount of the continuation. >> the pope will give his last mass on wednesday. on thursday he'll meet with cardinals before flying off to the summer retreat south of rome. back here two men who

worked together at a special education school are dead tonight. after what police say is an apparent murder-suicide. it all happened in tacoma park, maryland, just before 2:00 this morning when police would receive reports of gunshots fired near the 7300 block of flower avenue. officers arrived on the scene to find the two men lying in the driveway of the condominium. both have been shot to death. >> i woke up at 6:30 this morning and saw police tape everywhere. and so of course they started to look out the window to realize what was going on. and that my house was taped off. then i remembered my dog barking as i really did not pay attention like i should have. >> it's unsettling because i think that we are so aware of how much gun violence that there is. and none of us are safe. >> police said that they were friends and co-workers at the education school in the

district of columbia. they have not released a motive in this case. the long-time d.c. councilman is only to become the second legislature in the district to be reprimanded. he told them a short time ago that he would no longer fight the reprimand that was sparked by the findings. they offered to trade his vote on the lottery contracts in exchange for the company dropping their bid to develop a property owned by metro. >> i did not recall this. three other people did not recall it. three additional people do recall it. and whether it is recalled or not at this point doesn't make a difference in a sense that there is no law broken, no crime committed, no financial interest. >> he is also losing his chairmanship, up for re- election next year. he said that he is not ready to

save as he will be seeking re- election. more on the councilman and the accomplishments and the controversies tonight on wusa9.com. and with less than a week away now, they will be hit hard unless they come up with a new plan. that warning from the white house again. some $85 billion that will be cut from military and domestic programs. the mandatory cuts are reducing spending by $1 trillion over the next decade. governors from both maryland and virginia were on face the nation this morning to discuss how the cuts will be impacting this area. >> they stand to wipe out a lot of hard-fought games. so whatever the difference might be, we understand that this will be an economic threat. you have to cut. don't put them on defense, why

danica patrick made the race at daytona 500 today, but no win the race. the checker flag went to a familiar champion. >> jimmie johnson took the

checker flag at the 55th running of the daytona 500. but all eyes were on danica patrick in car number 10. she briefly took the lead about halfway through. the first woman to lead for a full lap at nascar's biggest race. she stayed near the front of the pack, but eventually fell back. as she prepared to take the wheel, patrick must lay on her focus. during the week she had the fastest qualifying time. at the starting line, patrick got a nod from actor frank. >> drivers and danica, start your engine! >> reporter: it's been a dramatic week at the track. 33 fans were injured on saturday during the final lap of the other race. >> a car flew into the fence, sending tire and debris into stands. 14 fans were taken to the hospital. two remain there with serious, but stable injuries. workers repaired the fence in time for today's race. as for patrick despite their loss, they are at an all-time

foothills of colorado and the texas panhandle, consolidating into the lower and middle mississippi river valley. that will spell a big snow again for them to go to snow. as far as we are concerned, we are fine tonight and tomorrow and they will also impact our area on tuesday. don't put that umbrella too far away. temperatures are chilly now. nothing cay i.38 in fairfax. 40 in old town and 39 in bowie. winds will diminish and it will be cold as we are tracking that storm for tuesday. most of the precipitation in the metro area at least past the morning rush hour on tuesday. coming home will be a different story for them and that the winter storm watches have been there on monday night and tuesday. and for us tonight winds will diminish. winds will calm down becoming
